tapwater.org – Grants for educational establishments

Tapwater.org is offering grants, through its Tap Water Awards programme, to help support educational establishments in the UK to reduce their dependency on bottled waters by installing mains fed water machines and providing reusable stainless steel bottles.

Grants of between £300 and £5,000 are available to fund all or part of project costs.

Educational establishments registered in the UK are eligible to apply, including:

Schools.
Colleges.
Universities.

Examples of eligible project costs include:

Mains fed water machines.
Plumbing work to install machines.
Electrical work to install machines.
Buying of other items associated with mains fed machines.
Any other items associated with mains drinking water in schools.

ESF funding: Another free training opportunity- 1st May at Saunderton near High Wycombe

Our colleagues at OCVA are running a free training session at the Clare Foundation on 1st May 2012 from 10 am – 1 pm for organisations interested in applying for ESF funding.

The main focus of the European Social Fund Community Grant programme in the South East Region is to award grants up to £12,000 to enable small Voluntary, Community and Not-for-Profit Organisations to put on activities and training that offer new skills and confidence building to unemployed and disadvantaged people to help them move towards employment.

The Buy Better Together Challenge: Community buying incentive

The new ‘Buy Better Together Challenge’ is designed to promote community buying models in the UK. Community buying involves groups of individuals combining their buying power to purchase goods or services together and get better deals from shops and other suppliers. It can also provide many social and environmental benefits. Communities can get together to buy a whole range of goods and services from heating oil to solar panels to food.

Through this scheme, participants will highlight new models of community buying, stimulate enterprise and promote shared learning. Entrants are asked to address one or more of the below challenges:

Challenge One: Project aimed at creating a platform, tool or vehicle to help individuals to come together and form a community buying group.
Challenge Two: Project aimed at enabling existing or new community groups to develop their purchasing power by working collectively on behalf of individual consumers.
Challenge Three: Project aimed at businesses to empower their employees or consumers to group for community buying.

Both BIS and Co-operatives UK have contributed £30,000 to the challenge, meaning there is a total funding pot of £60,000 available. There is a £15,000 prize available for the overall winner to go towards making their project a reality. The funding can be used to support training, mentoring and seed funding for stand out projects.

Open to applications from today, groups and organisations within the public, voluntary or business sectors in the UK all qualify for the Challenge.

Sport England – Sportsmatch, match funding incentive

Sportsmatch is a programme delivered by Sport England that was set up to encourage the business sector to invest money in sport at the grass roots level. Sportsmatch acts as a match funding incentive by offering to double the pot of money available on a pound for pound basis.

Priority areas for Sportsmatch are:

Women and girls.
Black and minority ethnic groups.
Disability groups.

Properly constituted organising bodies involved in sport are eligible to apply, such as:

Local authorities.
Governing bodies.
Sports clubs.
Charities.
Voluntary youth associations.
Schools/colleges.

Grants of between £1,000 and £100,000 are available.

All funding is expected to be allocated by the end of Autumn 2012 so it is advised for organisations to submit their applications as soon as possible

As groups look for new ways of attracting funding, a whole new area called ’social investment’ has grown up, using phrases like social bond or philanthropic capital.

KnowHowNonProfit (a part of the NCVO) in association with the Charities Aid Foundation has produced a very useful resource which explains many of the terms used. On the website, it gives a short definition, and explains the terms in more detail. It outlines where they might be used, who might provide it, and gives a case study for each one:

The Cabinet Office is reviewing the Charities Act 2006, there are two online surveys that you can use to participate and give your opinions. One is for members of the public and the other is for charities.

They also want more detailed evidence on a number of subject areas:

Public benefit and the definition of charity
Exempt charities and the principal regulator approach
Land disposals
Trustees
Mixed motive investment
Merger, restructuring and winding up
Organisational forms.

In the next two to three weeks they will be asking for more detailed evidence on these subject areas as well:

Public charitable collections
Fundraising: self-regulation and transparency
Charities’ accounting and reporting
Charity registration and excepted charities
Complaints, appeals and redress.
